Laid to Rest
So there I was, curled up in a ball on my bed, unable to do anything but fight for survival as two phantoms resolved a century and a half year old blood feud. I had been tossed into the fire, dealt a hand of cards in a game I wasn’t playing, but the cards were on the table and the bets had been made. My years of martial arts training hadn’t prepared me for a fight like this, a fight where my life lay on the line, and I could do absolutely nothing about it.

It was 3 am. I had been up all night. Not only was there a terrifically loud thunderstorm raging right outside my window, but there was also a horrifically loud argument going on in my bedroom. I was the only one affected by it, and I couldn’t get away from it. No matter where I went, it followed. At the moment I sat at the end of my bed with my face in my hands. I couldn’t sleep. There was no way that I could rest with the racket that was resonating from the far corner of my room.
“I was nice enough to help you, and look how you repaid me!” Kate screamed gesturing to the bullet hole in her gut.

Kate grimaced as another wave of pain washed over her face. To me, it felt as if I had been pinched.
“Are you protecting me?!” I turned to Kate and asked, both surprised and unnerved.
“Just be grateful,” she said through clenched teeth.
“But… why? Why are you attacking me?” I asked turning to James. “And why is she getting hurt?”
“Because if attack her, then I’ll hurt myself,” James answered nonchalantly.

Second Wind
The pain was somehow bearable, as if my body had acquired a slight immunity to the dreadful witch’s powers. However, I was still unable to resist the crushing sensation gravity seemed to be bestowing upon me. I could do nothing but wait, wait for whatever force that was acting upon me, be it nature or death, to release its pressure.
As usual, time dragged on as I tried my hardest to ignore my spasming muscles and the tension that they left behind. In a way, waiting was a game I played with the phantom. My mind and all the testosterone in my body wanted to show Kate I could take whatever she dished out. It

In a desperate reaction, I reached down and grabbed the handle. Clenching my teeth, I gave a quick yang. The blade grudgingly released its grip. Another surge of pain raced up my leg causing me to let out a yell. I felt hot blood begin to run down my leg, but I continued to limp towards the forest. Looking up, I saw Kate appear under the tall pine she had previously materialized under.
